How to Create a Favicon

Open your graphics software of choice. We recommend Adobe PhotoShop, Jasc Paint Shop Pro or Ulead PhotoImpact.

Create a blank canvas 16x16 pixel in size. Zoom in to approximately 1000x the actual size as this image size is very small and much easier to work with when viewed at a higher scale.

Create the icon image however you wish. Using your company's initials works well. Keep it simple.

Decrease the file to 16-color (4-bit). Save the file as favicon.ico. Note that the file extension is .ico and in order for the favicon to work properly with browsers that support favicon, the file must have this extension and be 16-color (no higher).

Upload your new favicon.ico file to the root directory of your site using your FTP program. When your site visitors bookmark your site, the favicon will appear in their browser address bar and favorites file.
